RAW BEAUTY - Tayler
Has your hair always been natural? If not, when and why did you decide to go natural?
Well growing up my hair had always been long and thick due to the relaxers my mom put in it. I had no control over my hair whatsoever until my sister began to transition when she was in high school and I was in elementary. I always followed behind her footsteps so when I got old enough to do my own hair I transitioned around middle school. I did braids a lot until I got into high school and cut the rest of the processed ends off.
How would you describe your hair type?
GEEZ! My hair type is different everywhere. The nape area is about a 3c, the crown is about 4b and everywhere else is 4a.
How is your beautiful hair maintained? Please share your regimen:
Well being that I'm a college student now, I can't do all of my diy protein treatments and deep conditioners like I used to but I keep it simple but do enough to know my hair is healthy.
How often do you shampoo, and what do you shampoo with?
I tend to only shampoo twice a month and I go for Shea Moisture's Jamaican black castor oil or any product from that line.
Do you deep condition your hair? If so, what do you deep condition with?
Yes! I just put deep conditioning back into my regimen due to an opening in my schedule. I use Shea Moisture's Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen Grow & Restore Treatment Masque or I like to make a simple mask using olive oil, honey, and mayonnaise.
What is your daily routine, e.g. moisturising spritz, scalp oil, etc.
I usually have early classes but I always spray my hair with water and inside of the water I'll add some jbco and a leave in conditioner from Cantu. And I will do that in the mornings, throughout the day and before I go to bed. And every other night I will massage my scalp with jbco.
Do you trim your hair regularly? If so, how often do you get a trim?
I only trim when necessary. Most of the times I dust because I get fairy knots like crazy!!! So maybe once a month I'll go in to check the ends of my hair and dust those little knots.
Do you style your own hair or do you go to hair salons?
I MOST DEFINITELY style my own hair because my scalp is tender and my hair is precious. I don't like anyone tugging on either.
How do you manage to get your fro so fabulously full or do you just have thick hair?
I naturally have thick hair but to maintain my thickness I do minimum manipulation to my hair. And if I do style it I make sure the style lasts the whole week so I won't constantly have fingers in my hair.
What tips would you give someone who wants to transition to natural hair? And what have you learnt about how to manage your fro in general over the years?
Do you think you’ll ever cut your fro off and try a different hairstyle, e.g. pixie cut or locs?
GIRL no! Lol I like to switch it up, I'll put in my famous faux love or try a wig here and there but I genuinely love my natural hair.
What do you love most about your fro?
I love how I can style my hair different ways and just the overall health of my hair.
What do you hate most about your fro?
I don't like when my hair gets dry quickly and that I know for sure that if I straighten my hair it will not go well for the long run so I never put heat on my hair unless it's a blow out.
