RAW BEAUTY - Lauryn
Has your hair always been natural? If not, when and why did you decide to go natural?
My hair was always natural up until my middle school years. I was enrolled into a predominately Caucasian school district and was pressured by most of the kids into thinking that my hair was messy and unprofessional. I’ve always believed that having Pin straight hair would make people like and accept me more (popularity was a huuuuuge deal back then), so I went on YouTube and learned how to use a straightener.
The day I came to school with my hair straight everyone loved it and gave me compliments and told me that I looked cool, so naturally I straightened it every other week since!! It wasn’t until my sophomore year of high school that I realized that I missed being different from everyone else, and decided to go back to being natural.
The journey was super duper long and resulted in many tears, but I am SO glad that I went through it! I learned so much from my journey from self love lessons to what it means to be dedicated. It’s so funny too. The same people who used to make fun of me and call me names now tell me that they wish their hair was like mine and follow my hair page!
Is that your natural hair colour?
No, I actually just dyed it a deep mahogany a couple of days ago.
How is your beautiful hair maintained? Please share your regimen:
I co-wash my hair every 3-8 days (depending on how good my wash and go was the previous week) dry it a bit with a cotton t-shirt, and usually style it while it’s damp with a cream based product along with a gel on top for hold.
I blow dry my fro on low heat, pick it out with my fingers, lightly massage my scalp with Jamaican black castor oil, and pineapple it up and call it a night! Depending on the products used my wash days can last up to a week and a few days. (Eco styler and Carols Daughter products usually get the job done!)
How often do you shampoo, and what do you shampoo with?
I usually co-wash instead of shampoo, but I shampoo maybe twice a month with Carols Daughter Rhassoul cleansing shampoo. It makes my hair smell and feel amazing every single time. I can’t see ever changing it, aside from maybe using an acv rinse.</span
Do you deep condition your hair? If so, what do you deep condition with?
I always go the diy route with deep conditioners, My all time fave that carried me through my journey for years is a Greek yogurt honey mask. It’s:
1 cup of Greek yogurt
1tbs olive oil
That’s it! It works wonders every single time and leaves my hair looking amazing everytime. I swear by it.
What is your daily routine, e.g. moisturising spritz, scalp oil, etc.
I oil my scalp daily with Jamaican Black castor oil or lavender oil to promote growth and volume in my hair.
Do you trim your hair regularly? If so, how often do you get a trim?
I do! I diy trim the ends of my hair every month or so. (Super tiny trims) trimming really got me from point A to point B during my transitioning period. Healthy hair is definitely happy hair.
Do you style your own hair or do you go to hair salons?
I do everything myself! I don’t trust others with my curls lol.
How do you manage to get your fro so fabulously big or do you just have thick hair?
On day one of my washday, my hair shrinks a bit, so I take some Jamaican castor oil or lavender oil, massage it in, and use my fingers as a pick to really get it as big as I want (Regular hair picks can be damaging!)
What tips would you give someone who wants to transition to natural hair? And what have you learnt about how to manage your fro in general over the years?
Do you think you’ll ever cut your fro off and try a different hairstyle, e.g. pixie cut or locs?
I absolutely love locs and tell my mom all the time that I’m going to get them when I’m 42 lol. Why 42? I’m really couldn’t tell you. But that’s the next style on my list. I can’t wait!
What do you love most about your fro?
I love how it makes me unique. I love how it strikes up conversation around strangers. I love how it sets off my outfits. I love how versatile it is, i love how it can change due to what products / method is used.
Big hair is a big mystery and one big guessing game. It’s unpredictable, and I absolutely love that. I just love love love my hair. And no one can take that away from me anymore!
What do you hate most about your fro?
If there’s one thing I hate, it’s how if I use a product that it doesn’t agree with, I’d have to wash my hair all over again! It’s the absolute worst before big events or dates.
Especially if I've already done my makeup and have to invent a way to keep my face on while washing my fro.
