RAW BEAUTY - Hermela Solomon
Has your hair always been natural? If not, when and why did you decide to go natural?
Yes I've technically been natural my whole life. I have never applied any color or chemical to my curls :)
How would you describe your hair type?
I would say I have a good combination of 3a, 3b, and 3c hair type. The texture of my hair differs all throughout my head!
How is your beautiful hair maintained? Please share your regimen:
I shampoo my hair about once a week and co-wash every two weeks. At the moment my favorite co-wash is from As I Am and my favorite shampoo is from Dove and it’s their daily moisture line.
Do you deep condition your hair? If so, what do you deep condition with?
Yes, it's so important to deep condition my hair weekly to help restore the moisture! I usually like to sleep in it overnight and do a full wash day the next morning. At the moment my favorite deep conditioner is the Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil from SheaMoisture!
What is your daily routine, e.g. moisturising spritz, scalp oil, etc.
I don’t really have a daily routine once I’ve washed my hair. I would say everyday after waking up I make sure to apply some oil for added shine. I love working out so if I need to I’ll refreshen my curls using the same products used for my wash 'n go!
Do you trim your hair regularly? If so, how often do you get a trim?
I trim my hair about every 3-4 months! My hair grows fast, so I have to always maintain the split ends I get from diffusing my hair when drying it!
Do you style your own hair or do you go to hair salons?
Yes I style my own hair! I've learned to work with different products and tools to achieve different looks. If I'm looking to get my hair straightened, I like to get it done professionally to avoid any additional damage.
How do you manage to get your fro so fabulously big or do you just have thick hair?
I really think this has to mainly do with genetics! I have pretty thick/dense hair so it's easy for it to get big! But to add some more volume I like to pick my curls. I only pick my hair from the roots to avoid any frizz.
What tips would you give someone who wants to transition to natural hair? And what have you learnt about how to manage your fro in general over the years?
Do you think you’ll ever cut your fro off and try a different hairstyle, e.g. pixie cut or locs?
I dont think I would ever cut my hair short, but recently I've been interested in trying different protective styles to change things up a bit.
What do you love most about your hair?
I love how big and bouncy my curls are! I really think my hair fits my personality :) I also love that I can achieve so many different looks with it. It’s so fun!
What do you hate most about your hair?
The amount of time it takes to dry/style my hair!!!!
